COSCO’s $3 billion port project in Chancay, Peru, looks to remake logistics in Latin America
The Chancay Port Terminal will be a multipurpose port that will mobilize containerized cargo, general cargo, non-mineral bulk cargo and rolling cargo, becoming a regional trade hub and South American maritime node to Asia and Oceania.
The port is designed to become the main terminal for trade between Latin America and Asia, which has generated expectation that further infrastructure will be developed to complement and support its operations.
"There is interest from [Brazilian] businesspeople given that the port would reduce transportation time to Asia by up to 15 days". This project has the potential to send the Panama Canal into a progressive irrelevancy.
Thanks to Sapa Inca's technology platform, there will be more machines than people operating a world port hub. For example, tall containers in the terminals will be handled with automated cranes and unmanned trucks, powered by our technology solutions and recommendations. The cranes of the two terminals will be semi-automated because the cargo is not uniform.
With Sapa Inca's platform, Cosco has selected the best equipment from the different ports it has in the world for the specific loads and functionality of Chancay. "It will be a port 100% without power generation to the combustion base, as everything will be electric. And the technology is going to be equal or superior to what Shanghai has today."
